Game Boards for Spring Literacy Centers

Yeah! Spring is almost here!  Living in the north, when the calendar says it’s spring it often doesn’t feel like spring at all. It is not uncommon to still have several inches of snow on the ground well into April. But when we flip that calendar to May- well, that’s when it feels like spring and that’s when I go grab those game boards for spring literacy centers. One of my favorite spring themed activities for teaching sight words are the spring-themed sight word and phonics game boards. There are 4 different designs and 9 game boards containing words from the Dolch 220 sight word list. Each game board contains 25 words from each of the 9 lists. The game

Hard and Soft Sounds of C and G

Hard and Soft Sounds of C and G Shortly after students learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet we teach them that the vowels and several consonants actually have two sounds. The consonants “c” and “g” are two of the letters that make different sounds depending on the letters that follow them in the word. Learning and teaching hard and soft sounds of c and g can be tricky, but these activities are sure to be a hit! Soft and Hard G The most common sound for the “g” is the “hard” sound as in the word “goat”.  However, if the “g” is followed by an i, e or y it makes the “soft” /j/ sound as in the

Games for Teaching Contractions

Games for Teaching Contractions In our everyday speech, we use contractions.  Contractions are a kind of “short cut” in the way we use words to communicate.  Think about it for a bit.  If you were going to tell a friend that you aren’t going to lunch, are you likely to say, “I am not going to lunch” or “I’m not going to lunch”?  Because we use these words so often in our speech, it’s important that we teach students how to use the words in writing.  Teaching contractions can be fun and there are tons of great games for teaching contractions! Introducing Contractions When introducing the idea of contractions, it’s helpful to begin by defining the word “contract”.  “Contract” means

Alphabet Activities for Valentine’s Day

These alphabet activities for Valentine’s Day are perfect for your kindergarten literacy centers during the month of February! Actually, these alphabet activities can be used year round! Although all the activities can be used for small group instruction and independent centers, this Valentine Bear activity is particularly ideal for independent centers as it has a self checking feature. So here’s how that self checking feature works. First students place the beginning sound pictures on the corresponding alphabet bear template. Once all the pictures are placed on the template, the students turn the cards over and if the upper- and lowercase letters match, their responses were correct. Super easy! Great for teaching beginning sounds or upper- to lower-case letters!   The

FLOSS Spelling Rule

Teaching the FLOSS Spelling Rule Teaching the FLoSS spelling rule can be easy! Memory aids are often used to help students remember certain spelling rules. The FLoSS rule is one of the first spelling rules taught to our first and second grade students to help them understand when to double the final “f”, “l” and “s” consonants at the end of certain words.   The word “floss” actually follows the FLoSS rule.  When a /f/, /l/ /s/ (or /z/) is heard after a short vowel at the end of a one-syllable word, it is spelled with a double “ff”, “ll”, “ss” or “zz”.  Okay, you’re probably thinking how did that “z” sneak in there.  Well, there really aren’t too many words that end
