Teaching Short Vowel Sounds

Teaching Short Vowel Sounds Those short vowel sounds can really trip up our young readers. Several of the vowels sound so similar it’s no wonder that they can be so tricky. Discrimination activities, such as this vowel sticks activity, can help our students hear the differences between the sounds. Several years ago I attended a training based on Orton Gillingham methods and the training introduced a strategy called vowel intensives. Because those vowels can be so tricky, repeated practice is necessary- even if it’s just for a few minutes before introducing new phonics skills. When teaching short vowels, be sure to differentiate this activity.  You can do this by choosing which and how many vowels to use during instruction. You

Phoneme Grapheme Mapping Resources

Shortly after students learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet, we introduce the concept that many vowels and consonant sounds can be spelled in different ways. Let’s take the /f/ sound for example. Most of the time the /f/ sound is spelled with “f” as in the words “fan”, “fish” and “fix”. Sometimes the /f/ sound is spelled “ff” as in the words “cuff” and “off”; sometimes “gh” as in “tough” and sometimes “ph” as in “phone”. This can be pretty overwhelming for our young readers and writers. How do students know when to use which spelling for the sounds in the words they wish to write? Phoneme Grapheme Mapping Let’s take the words “pin” and “frog”.  Each of

“Sweet” Alphabet Cupcake Activities!

It’s always important to incorporate hands-on activities into learning letters and sounds.  Our little preschoolers and kindergarteners really enjoy matching activities.  Matching activities are great for independent centers or as an activity for direct instruction.  These activities can be easily differentiated as you can choose how many and which cupcakes to use.  Simply  place the cupcake tops and bottoms on the table and have your student(s) match the beginning sound of the picture to the lowercase letter.  An upper- to lowercase matching activity is also included in the downloadable file. The Alphabet Cupcake activity is available through my online Teachers Pay Teachers store or through the Make, Take & Teach website.

Bunny Match Alphabet and CVC Word Activities

Spring is just around the corner and it certainly has been fun working on spring themed activities! Although we still have snow on the ground and a thin layer of ice on the lake, the sights and sounds of spring are now just beginning to make an appearance. The penguin alphabet match and the penguin CVC match activities were a definite hit during the winter months that many of my friends asked for a spring themed activity as well.  I thought a bunny themed activity would be a super cute substitute for that adorable penguin that Kyle (fabulous artist) created. The activities contain a self-checking feature which makes them ideal for use during independent centers. For the alphabet game, students

Short Vowel Basketball Activity!

It’s that time of year again! The college basketball championship is in full swing and, honestly, my team was ousted in the first round. Kind of takes just a little bit of fun out of watching the games, but I have to admire the all those young players. It’s still fun to watch. Many of our beginning readers are watching the games too! It’s always fun to take advantage of these interests and incorporate them into our educational activities. The Short Vowel Basketball activity contains two separate activities- one with pictures only which helps students listen for the short vowel sound in words and the other with words only. The activities are differentiated as there are sorting templates for 2-,
