Fall Themed Math Bundle for Our Kindergarten and First Graders!

My goodness! Fall is just around the corner and it’s time to pull out all of our fall themed activities! The Make, Take & Teach K-1 Math bundle includes 13 fall themed activities designed to teach basic number concepts. Here are just a few of my favorites from this bundle! Of course an early numeracy bundle wouldn’t be complete without Play Doh mats! Student just love making numbers with Play Doh. This activity is ideal for independent centers. You can certainly purchase your Play Doh, but I like to make my own as the dough is softer to form. Be sure to use Wilton cake food coloring if opting to make your own as the colors are so vibrant! File Folder Activities for Early Numeracy

My little friend, Maverick, just loves these file folder activities for learning his numbers.  Whenever you can incorporate Play Doh into an activity, it’s sure to be a hit! Whether we’re teaching letters/sounds or numbers, it’s always important to add a hands-on component and Play Doh certainly does the trick.  Our Winter Themed File Folder Activities for Early Numeracy were so much fun during centers that I decided to create a similar activity just for Valentine’s Day. Actually, this activity can be used year round, but it’s perfect for February. There’s a little bit of assembly involved. You’ll have to glue the templates on a file folder and laminate. I used a red file folder, but a manilla file folder

Mitten Match for Early Numeracy

These mitten match activities have certainly been a hit during winter themed centers. Whether it’s working with early numeracy concepts, rhyme or letters and sounds, our little kindergarten and first grade friends just love the hands-on component of this activity! Of course you don’t really need to use clothespins to match the mittens, but it adds a little twist on the activity and incorporates a fine motor component as well. Winter Themed Math Activities Using Base 10 Blocks

It’s always fun to incorporate a little seasonal spirit into center activities. Many of my first grade friends are now learning place value using base 10 blocks and I thought it’d be a great time to introduce a hands-on winter themed activity. The self-checking feature of this activity makes it perfect for independent centers. When you download the file you’ll receive the template and 50 snowballs with numbers 1-50. The student simply chooses a snowball and builds the number. When done, he/she just turns the snowball over and checks to see if the number of rods and units match. The Representing Numbers Using Base 10 Blocks can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store or on the Make,

Winter Themed Addition with 10 Frames

Developing fluency with number combinations that make 10 is important in kindergarten and first grade. Students who can quickly “make 10” can apply this strategy to adding numbers efficiently when using this strategy makes sense to solve an addition problem. For example, if given the problem 6+9, the student can break down the problem into (5+1)+9, 5+(1+9), 5+10=15. Practice with “making 10” provides a foundation for efficiently using this strategy. Using 10 frames is important as it provides a framework for visualizing the numbers. When you download the Winter themed Make 10 activity you’ll receive 3 differentiated templates. You’ll need to laminate the templates so that the students can use a dry erase marker to write the problems. In addition

What is Subitizing?

What is Subitizing? Simply put, subitizing is the ability to recognize a small group of objects without counting. It is a fundamental skill in the development of number sense.  I find that using a real-life example often helps in understanding certain concepts so let’s give it a try.  Last week I baked some sugar cookies. If I were to take four of these cookies and place them on a plate I would know there are 4 on the plate without having to count each one individually. This is because I have a “stable mental image” of the pattern of 4.  I can move the cookies around in different positions on the plate and still know there are 4 cookies. Since I have

Winter is certainly making its presence known up here in Northern Michigan and it’s time to pull out all those winter themed activities! Many of my first grade friends are learning and practicing addition and subtraction so I thought it would be fun to create a few activities involving fact families and number bonds. When you laminate the activities students can use a dry erase marker and, when done, simply wipe clean and the activity will be ready for the next time. When you download the Penguin Fact Family activity you’ll receive 39 penguins with facts to 20. Be sure to differentiate

Fun Fall Themed Math Center Activity!

The candy corn activities for rhyme, letters/sounds and vocabulary have been such a hit that I’ve had numerous requests to create the activity for math. Assembling the activity is super simple. Just print, laminate and cut the candy corns along the dotted line. You can easily differentiate this activity by choosing which and how many candy corn pieces to use. Some of my clever teacher friends added a self-checking feature. Before they placed the activity through the laminating machine, they put three matching stickers on each of the candy corn pieces for each number. After the students have created a candy corn with the numeral, 10-frame and word, they  they just turn the pieces over to see if the stickers match.
