Activities on the Go! Race Car Blending

It’s always so much fun to take a little trip to our local Habitat for Humanity restore. You never know treasures what you can find. When my kiddos were furnishing their college apartments and dorm rooms we were pretty much restore regulars. My girls are also big crafters and love to use recycled materials in their projects. Last year on one of our many trips to the store we came across these old VHS movies. We have tons in our basement too as they stored those old Disney favorites.  As we were going through the stacks traveling down memory lane, the idea of using the cases to store activities hit. What a great way to recycle and the activities would fit

Phonemic Awareness Activities – Just Grab and Go!

Last year I was cleaning my basement getting ready for our annual garage sale and came across all those old Disney movies housed in VHS cases.  Although our VHS player is long gone and the kids are now into their late teens and twenties, parting with those old movies was pretty difficult.  I can’t tell you how many times I watched Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast- I can still sing many of those songs years later.  While I was looking at that old stack of tapes, I was trying to think of ideas for re-purposing the case and it hit me!  They would make ideal storage containers for activities!  Here’s the vision: The step- by-step directions for the activity

Race Car Blending

Here’s a super fun way for teaching students to blend words.  Just a quick little stop at the dollar store to pick up a few race cars and you’re all set.  Simply provide each student with a racing track and a car and have them say the sounds of the letters as they move the car across each letter.  We want to be sure that they are smoothly blending the sounds together and not stopping between each sound and this little activity may just do the trick.  It’s also a great way to engage those boys! The Race Car Blending activity can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store or through the Make, Take & Teach website.

Teaching Phonemic Awareness Skills

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words are made up of sequences of speech sounds.  The child’s level of phonemic awareness upon entering school is one of the strongest indicators of how well he/she will learn to read.  Children must have an understanding that words are made up of separate speech sounds that can be broken apart and put together to form words.  Without this understanding, learning the alphabet doesn’t make much sense.  Although some children enter school with an appreciation of the sounds of language, many do not.  The exciting part is that, as teachers, by assessing our students’ phonemic awareness skills early on, we can identify those who
