Phonemic Awareness FREEBIE!

The research is very clear regarding the relationship between phonological/ phonemic awareness skills and later reading achievement. Children need to have an appreciation of how sounds can be put together to create words. Incorporating phonemic awareness activities into our lessons is critically important and they really don’t need to take up a significant amount of time. Quick and easy activities such as the Doggie, Where’s My Bone? activity are perfect for use during your small group instruction. This particular activity teaches students to recognize the position of sounds within words. You simply say a word containing 3 sounds– such as “cat”– and then a sound within the word– such as /a/. The student places a bone on either the head, body or

Differentiating the activity is a snap as you choose how many and which rhyming scarecrows to use. Students name the picture on the scarecrow and then find the rhyming matches. Once the scarecrow is filled, have your students turn over the cards and if the pictures match the answer is correct. When you download this activity you will receive 13 rhyming scarecrows and 46 colorful rhyming pictures! The Scarecrow Rhyme activity

Phonemic Awareness Intervention Kit

Years ago we started using the DIBELS assessment to screen students for reading difficulties and to monitor at-risk students throughout their intervention. We had all this wonderful data, but there seemed to be a gap between the data and then exactly how to use the data to guide instruction and intervention.  So, if a child fell within the “intensive” range on the First Sound Fluency or Phoneme Segmentation Fluency assessments, what activities could/should be used to help remediate that particular skill? In order to make the connection between assessment and intervention, the intervention kits were developed. The intervention kits are intended to be used by either classroom teachers or interventionists to address specific skills during small group instruction. The kits (there are

Valentine Rhyming Activity

Many of my preschool and kinder friends are now working with the concept of rhyme.  Rhyming is an important early literacy skill as it helps our young readers understand that words are comprised of sounds which can be changed to make new and different words.  This rhyming activity is ideal for your centers during the early months of February.  When you download this activity you will receive 48 colorful hearts containing rhyming words.  You’ll want to be sure to differentiate this activity by choosing which and how many rhyming hearts to use. The Snow is Flying! Grab Those Mittens

Here in Northern Michigan winter can last for months (and I mean months and months).  We often have snow from late November through mid-April.  Well, up in the north, putting on your boots, mittens, hats, coats, and snow pants is an everyday event.  It can take up to 10 minutes to get our little kindergarteners ready to go outside–and then another 10 minutes to get undressed!  Multiply that routine by three times a day–craziness!  Whether you live in a winter wonderland or in warmer parts of the world, the Mitten Match activity is sure to be a hit with your kiddos during the winter months. Last year, my fabulous artist created these adorable mittens.  They were perfect for creating a
