Halloween Themed Sight Word Activities!

The Climb & Slide has been a favorite literacy center activity. This game is a variation of Chutes and Ladders and it offers a fun way to practice sight words. There’s a little bit of assembly required, but once laminated, the games will last for years. To assemble the activity, simply print the the templates on office paper and glue to a file folder. I color-coordinated the three game boards per Dolch sight word list, but any old file folder will do. These game board were specifically designed for Halloween, but I bet the kiddos will be asking to play this game all year long! The Halloween Climb & Slide Dolch Sight Words activity can be found in my online Teachers

Football Themed Sight Word Activities

The leaves are turning colors (at least here in Northern Michigan) and there is a crispness to the air that can only mean one thing. It’s football season! Many of our kiddos are football fans and it’s always fun incorporating their interests into classroom learning activities. This football themed bundle contains several hands-on activities for learning and practicing sight words (I use the Dolch 220 sight words). The activities allow for differentiation as they are leveled by difficulty.  It’s perfect for your fall themed centers! Just for a storage idea, I used these file folder containers purchased at Office Max. All the file folder game boards as well as the other activities store perfectly. Kyle (my artist) created these adorable game board

File Folder Sight Word Activities!

The Dolch Sight Word list is a list of 220 words that make up between 50-70% of the words we encounter in text. Most of these words are “service words” that must be quickly recognized in order to read fluently. Many of the Dolch sight words cannot be “sounded out” and they need to learned by “sight”. Because recognizing these words is so important during reading, using a variety of activities to teach, practice and memorize the words is critical in teaching children to read. I’m such a believer in a hands-on approach to learning. Using hands-on activities (aka multi-sensory activities) children have a better chance of  recognizing the word when reading and knowing how to spell the word during

It’ll certainly be a “hit” with your kiddos this spring! Just for a storage idea, I used these file folder containers purchased at Office Max. Fly Swat Activities!

I was strolling the aisles of the Dollar Tree the other week and came across this super adorable frog fly swatter! That was just enough motivation to pull out the fly swatting activities! Of course, any old fly swatter will do, but geez…. he’s just so cute! Many of my kindergarten friends are just learning sight words and my first grade friends always need a little more practice. The fly swatting activity has been a favorite. There’s a little assembly involved, but it is so worth it! All you’ll need to do is print the flies, laminate and cut. Then place a bit of velcro on each fly and then a strip of velcro on the back of the fly

Basketball Themed Sight Word Bundle

Go Green! Go White! If you recognize that chant you’re probably guessing that I’m a Michigan State fan. I just love college sports and basketball is one of my favorites.  March Madness just started and the MSU Spartans are one of the favored teams. Whether you have a team headed to the tournament or not, incorporating basketball themed activities in March may just spark a little bit of interest in our kiddos who either play or enjoy watching the sport.  This basketball themed bundle contains several hands-on activities for learning and practicing sight words (I use the Dolch 220 sight words). Just for a storage idea, I used these file folder containers purchased at Office Max. All the file folder game

Lucky You! for Sight Words and CVC Words

I just love the Lucky You! activities for practicing sight words and words containing targeted phonics skill. This activity is perfect for St. Patrick’s themed centers.  To assemble the activity all you’ll need to do is print the cards single sided to double sided and then cut the cards along the dotted line. Now to play the game simply choose which and how many word cards to use. Place the cards word-side down on the table and have your students take turns choosing cards and reading words. If the player picks the “Lucky You!” card, he/she can choose two more cards. If the player picks the leprechaun card, well…. all the cards must be put back. The player with the

Free Valentine Sight Word Game Boards

These Valentine Game Boards are near and dear to my heart. Five years ago I sat down at my computer and created my very, very first activity for this blog. It was on my old PC using Publisher. Since then I’ve switched over to a Mac (thank goodness) and spruced the game boards up a bit, but every February when I pull them out from the activity box, those memories of just starting out with blogging and creating activities for my little friends come flooding back. There are nine game boards which correlate to the Dolch 220 sight word list. They are great for centers as you can differentiate for your students by using the game board at their level.

Hockey Themed Sight Word Activities!

I have to admit it, hockey is not my sport. My own kiddos spent hours on the soccer field and on the slopes so there just wasn’t enough time for the skating rink. However, hockey is a very popular sport up in my neck of the woods and I’ve had tons of requests to transfer the soccer themed activities into hockey related activities. So that is my mission this winter. Actually, I updated all the sports themed activities to include game boards which can be mounted on file folders as well as Climb and Slide boards and combined them into sports-themed bundles.  Just for a storage idea, I used these file folder containers purchased at Office Max. All the file
